Having a good quality raincoat is an absolute must in every women's wardrobe. Even if you don't live in an area that experiences a lot of rain, having a coat that will protect you from moisture & wind is essential year round. That can be for morning walks, going to the gym, gardening, or something to curb the chill of a seaside breeze. The occasions are endless.

There is one problem though. And it's a big one. So many raincoats out there are A) Bulky & unflattering,  B) Impractical and or single-use orientated or C) Both A & B!

Here are some pointers to help you pick your forever & everything raincoat.

Waist not, want not.

Too many raincoats on the market are bulky & baggy! As a result they have a childlike feel about them & take you back to school swimming gala days! Look for something that will accentuate your waist. Whether it is a belt, drawstring or in the design, this is essential to ensure you can wear your coat to a variety of occasions. Have a look at Duck Apparel's Black raincoat for inspiration here.

Shake a tail-feather

Let's talk about length! You want to try find a coat that is mid-thigh length or slightly longer. This way it will provide more coverage without limiting your motion. Even better if you can find a coat with a 2-way zip that can zip up from the bottom. This way if you are walking, cycling or even sitting you will be comfortable. A bonus is to find a coat that is slightly longer at the back. This creates a beautiful & elegant silhouette. Check out Duck Apparel's Leopard Print raincoat for an idea of a raincoat that is slightly longer at the back here.

Inner beauty also counts

So often the inside of a raincoat in overlooked & forgotten about. Who wants a hard, rough & scratchy inner? No one! Look for something that has a lining. The fabric here is not too important, but ideally it will be something that is soft & breathable.

PS. If you find something with a fun pattern on the insIde, fold up the sleeves. The pattern showing on the sleeve cuff will just add that extra something. Not sure how this will look, we got you covered! Check it out.

Convenience is key

Not only do you want something that looks good, you are looking for something that will be practical to wear. Rain jackets that come with a little pouch are fabulous, so you can keep it in your handbag for when you need to use it. Plus, a decent size hood and zipped pockets (both are very important) are also a must!

.....& Breathe

On a more technical note, sometimes looking at product descriptions or labels can be confusing! Fret not, we are here to help you pick out the most essential specs. Firstly, make sure the outer fabric is waterproof, not water resistant. Waterproof fabrics will ensure absolutely no moisture gets in and will protect you & your clothes from getting soaked.

Next, try find something that has 2 or 2 & a half layers. A 2 layered coat will ensure that no moisture or wind gets in. More often than not these fabrics will also be breathable & make sure that moisture (from perspiration for example) can get out!
